Benefits of 2 Pass Program

Farming can be volatile due to weather, pest pressures, commodity pricing, and managing costs. Weather and commodity pricing are out of the grower’s control, but managing input cost isn’t. Weed pressure can be controlled by implementing a two-pass herbicide program option - its good for grower’s fields and their pocketbook! Here is a quick breakdown:

Step 1:

Using pre-emergent herbicides is the first phase of a successful two-pass system. Pre-emergent herbicides are applied to the soil surface before a crop emerges. Also, pre-emergent herbicides may contain contact herbicides providing a behind-the-planter type application that kills emerged weeds and provides residual at the soil level. Depending on a pre-emerge to maintain clean fields also depends on rainfall to activate residual properties. To little or too much rain can affect the overall performance of pre-emergent herbicides. This takes care of early season weed infestations, however tougher broadleaf weed species may emerge later. Growers need to budget a second herbicide trip across the field incase pre-emergent herbicides break to keep the middles clean until the crop canopies.

Step 2:

Post-emergent herbicides are the second phase of a successful two-pass system. Developing weed management programs, specific to common weed species in a field’s history, are important for a two-pass herbicide program. This approach prevents weed seedlings from sprouting and provides the crop with less competition from emerged weeds for water, nutrients and sunlight. Post-emergent herbicides are utilized once a field crop is established and weeds have emerged from the soil profile. Applying post-emergent herbicides after the residual from pre-emergent herbicides is depleted will control emerged weeds and provide more residual activity – thus preventing weed seedlings from taking hold. When growers are looking for consistent results, a two-pass herbicide program is important.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:

  • Starting with a clean field is the best way to prevent weeds. Spraying a burndown in the spring or cultivating the soil, decreases the weed seedbank and eradicates any emerged weeds – helping prepare fields for planting.
  • Developing weed management programs, specific to common weed species in a field’s history, are important for pre-plant, pre-emergence and post-emergent herbicide programs. Knowing the right herbicide to use for each field helps ensure success.
